WASHINGTON — A recall of more than 1.5 million eggs has been given the most severe classification by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration this week due to the risk of salmonella.
The voluntary recall received a "Class I" designation on Wednesday, with the FDA warning of a "situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."
The recall was initiated on July 22 by Midwest Poultry Services after identifying the issue at two of its Texas farms "through environmental monitoring practices and root cause analysis." During the initial recall notice in July, the company said it would stop distributing eggs from the Texas locations.
Midwest Poultry Services had distributed the eggs to Kroger and Brookshire Grocery Company stores across six U.S. states: Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
The recalled eggs were sold under multiple brand names, including Kroger, Simple Truth Cage Free, Brookshire’s, Country Morning and Sunups and were given sell-by or best-by dates between July 20 and Aug. 17.
Only eggs with the identifying plant codes P-1950 or 0840962 and a Julian Date between 157 and 184 printed on the side of the carton are affected. Consumers can find this code printed in date-coding ink on the left or right side of the carton. The FDA provided examples of these codes in the images below.
Salmonella Enteritidis can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can enter the bloodstream and cause more severe illness.
Customers who purchased the recalled eggs are urged not to eat them and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
