Players to Watch

Philadelphia needs its passing game to settle in quickly after the offseason change at the top of the receiver room, and Smith sits right at the center of that. He is positioned as the Eagles' No. 1 wide receiver after A.J. Brown was traded, and his role matters even more in an opener against a division opponent that will test how fast this group can find its rhythm.

DeBoer was Washington's head coach in 2023, when Stein was Oregon's offensive coordinator. The teams squared off twice that season. The Huskies escaped with a pair of three-point wins: 36-33 in Seattle in a regular-season matchup, then 34-31 in the Pac-12 Championship Game in Las Vegas.

Though Stein and DeBoer have traded the Pac-12 for the SEC, the respect remains.

"He's 125-20 as a head coach over his career. He wins everywhere he goes," Stein said of DeBoer, who is in his third season at Alabama. "Ryan Grubb, their OC, is extremely creative. I've stolen a lot of plays from Coach Grubb. He does a really good job with that unit."

Jury acquits rapper Lil Durk of all federal charges in 2022 murder-for-hire case

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A jury found rapper Lil Durk not guilty on Friday of orchestrating a murder-for-hire plot that resulted in the death of a man near the Beverly Center four years ago.

After three days of deliberations, the Los Angeles jury acquitted the Grammy-winning rapper on all federal charges in the 2022 ambush shooting.

During the trial, prosecutors told jurors that Lil Durk, whose legal name is Durk Banks, set in motion a plan to stalk, hunt and kill Tyquian Bowman, a rival Atlanta rapper known as Quando Rondo.

Federal prosecutors alleged that Banks planned, ordered and bankrolled the intended murder of Bowman as revenge after one of his associates killed a close friend of Banks', Dayvon "King Von" Bennett, in 2020.

According to prosecutors, the alleged plot mistakenly resulted in the death of Bowman's cousin, 24-year-old Saviay'a Robinson, who was shot in broad daylight on Aug. 19, 2022.

Banks, 33, pleaded not guilty through his defense team, which argued during opening statements that he had no involvement in the alleged scheme. His attorneys argued that his former personal assistant, Kavon Grant, was actually the one who set up the intended killing.

Three defendants total, including Banks, pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy, stalking using a dangerous weapon, stalking resulting in death, and two counts involving murder-for-hire allegations.

Banks' co-defendants -- Deandre Dontrell Wilson and David Brian Lindsey -- were convicted of stalking and conspiracy to commit stalking charges -- but acquitted of other counts. Banks was found not guilty on all charges.

For now, Banks remains in custody ahead of a second trial for severed federal counts of racketeering murder and firearms charges next month.

If convicted on all counts, Banks faced a life sentence in federal prison.

Banks won a Grammy in 2024 for his hit song "All My Life," which features J. Cole.

Brock Purdy throws 3 TDs as 49ers dominate Rams in Australia

 

San Francisco held Matthew Stafford to 155 yards and delivered a key fourth-down goal-line stop before 100,021 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, handing Los Angeles its most lopsided defeat since 2024.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) Mike Evans, Demarcus Robinson and Deebo Samuel caught touchdown passes from Brock Purdy, and the San Francisco 49ers routed the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 Friday in the first NFL regular-season game in Australia.

Purdy passed for 205 yards against the Rams' ineffective defense at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in front of 100,021 fans, the seventh-largest regular season crowd in NFL history.

Australia's sporting capital reveled in its first real taste of American football - and in a dominant win by the 49ers, who had already won many Aussies' affection by traveling to Melbourne a week earlier than the Rams, who only boomeranged in on Thursday morning.

A party atmosphere prevailed even with a Friday morning kickoff necessary to hit the lucrative primetime television audiences in the U.S. The fans got another memorable chapter in this NFC West rivalry as the 49ers blasted the preseason Super Bowl favorite Rams with superior play on both sides of the ball.

Kyren Williams scored the NFL’s first Australian touchdown on a 5-yard rush to begin the second quarter. but the Rams were a disaster Down Under. Los Angeles hadn't lost by more than seven points since November 2024.

While Purdy's offense managed enough big plays to win, the San Francisco defense frustrated NFL MVP Matthew Stafford into a 15-of-25 performance for just 155 yards. The Niners held the NFL's best offense last season to one score, even stopping Stafford on a fourth-down quarterback sneak from the San Francisco 1 in the third quarter.

Reigning AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett was practically invisible in his Rams debut after missing much of training camp with aches, recording zero tackles.

Much of the pregame talk for this trip centered around the teams’ starkly differing methods of preparation: The 49ers ingratiated themselves to the local fans as their body clocks adjusted, while the Rams stayed home until less than two days before kickoff, keeping their body clocks on California time.

Both teams started with understandable sluggishness for a 10:35 a.m. kickoff, but Williams' TD run finally got the crowd cheering. The quarterbacks then traded interceptions before Purdy shook off a shaky start and found former Rams receiver Robinson on a 39-yard post route.

San Francisco surged out of halftime, with Samuel's 45-yard kickoff return leading to Evans' TD catch over new Rams cornerback Jaylen Watson.

The Rams drove deep into the red zone, but after Puka Nacua was ruled down inches outside the goal line, the 49ers stuffed Stafford.

The 49ers host Miami on Sunday, Sept. 20.

The Rams host the New York Giants on Monday, Sept. 21.

The New England Patriots dropped their season opener Wednesday night with a 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Here is who caught our eye for better or worse upon live-viewing the Patriots' Week 1 contest.

Winners

ED Dre'Mont Jones: New England entered the regular season with question marks along the edge, but free agent addition Dre'Mont Jones started his Patriots tenure strongly. Jones ended the Seahawks opening drive of the game with a third-down sack and went on to log a team-high six other pressures the rest of the night. The sturdy edge defender also flashed against the run.

CB Christian Gonzalez: After inking his record-breaking contract extension roughly 48 hours ago, Gonzalez looked in mid-season form Wednesday night. The Patriots top corner allowed just two catches on five targets, including just one reception for five yards and a pass breakup while in coverage on Jaxon Smith-Njigba (16 routes).

WR Mack Hollins: Even before A.J. Brown's injury, Hollins played the second-most amount of snaps in the wide receiver room as he continued to hold a large offensive role. Hollins' made several key plays over the middle of the field and finished with a team-high 51 receiving yards on four catches, his biggest being a 4th-and-9 conversion late in the fourth quarter.

Losers

QB Drake Maye: Unacceptable.

That was the word Drake Maye used to describe his performance post game, which sums things up. Maye used his legs and the underneath passing attack to move the football early in the game while they built a 10-0 lead. Averaging just 2.4 air yards per pass, Maye was 17-of-22 for 127 yards and a touchdown playing an efficient style of offense.

Then, the quarterback admitted he lost patience in the fourth quarter. Maye threw three bad fourth quarter interceptions as he hunted big plays — seeing his average air yards per attempt jump to 8.0 in the final frame. Seattle played nearly 90 percent of their defense in zone to limit explosives, and Maye's aggressiveness and poor decisions late cost the Patriots on Wednesday.

WR Romeo Doubs: New England's free agent pass catcher failed to haul in any of his three targets in his Patriots debut Wednesday night. Doubs had a bad drop downfield before Maye's next pass was intercepted, and was earlier the target on Maye's first interception of the night.

"I just wasn't locked in enough. That's all," Doubs said post game. "Like I said, I'll be better."

LG Alijah Vera-Tucker: The Patriots did a better job of blocking things in front of Drake Maye than they did in the Super Bowl, as the quarterback was under pressure on 12 of his 42 drop backs (28.6%). It wasn't perfect, however, as Maye was sacked three times and still faced some free rushers. Free agent addition Alijah Vera-Tucker allowed a team-high four pressures and was on scene for one of the sacks allowed as he failed to pick up a stunt off the left side. The 27-year old hopefully just had some rust to shake off on a new offensive line after missing all of last season.

Honorable mentions

• Rhamondre Stevenson handled a heavy workload (85% of snaps) in the backfield and totaled 95 scrimmage yards on 23 touches. The Patriots run game as a whole struggled with a 22% success rate as Stevenson averaged 2.8 YPC and saw 50 of his 51 rushing yards come after contact.

• Eli Raridon caught his first career touchdown on his first career catch on a play-action delayed release.

• Will Campbell had a clean sheet in pass protection. He was on the left side on the aforementioned stunt and was called for holding in the run game.

• Elsewhere on the edge, rookie Gabe Jacas had some strong moments after a shaky preseason. Jacas logged his first career sack on a hustle play and flashed his athleticism to record a TFL.

• As a whole, the Patriots run defense remained inconsistent vs. Seattle. With some Super Bowl flashbacks, rookie Jadarian Price found running room outside the tackles.

• Christian Barmore had three pressures on 18 pass rush snaps.

• In addition to Gonzalez, cornerback Carlton Davis didn't allow a catch on two receptions while also recording two run stuffs.

• Andy Borregales knocked through a 50-yard field goal and his lone extra point.

• Punter Mitch Wishnowsky had an impressive Patriots debut with three i20s while helping limit electric returner Rashid Shaheed to just one return for nine yards. New England's coverage teams deserve credit as well, such as rookie Namdi Obiazor who recorded three special teams tackles.
